John 14:8

8 Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’

Philip said, Lord, what you are saying doesn’t make sense to us. If you would just give us a glimpse of the Father then we’d be convinced. We’d get it. We see you, but how is it that you are telling us we are seeing the Father? You don’t look like the Father, at least not the way we imagined He would look.
If we could see the ‘real deal’ that would be the confirmation we need to comprehend what you’re saying about yourself. We need to see you side by side so we can decide for ourselves if what you are saying makes sense.
We are troubled because we don’t understand. If we could just see God, then our hearts would be put at ease. It’s all so vague and mysterious to us. It would be much easier and simpler if you could just let us see the Father. It would be plain to us then.
We are so shaken by what you are saying about your departure then we can’t really think clearly enough to allow your words of comfort to sink in enough to have an impact. We need something external, some outward proof, to relieve our anxiety. We need something more concrete, something dramatic, and seeing the Father in person would be enough to show us that we don’t need to be afraid.
