John 14:15

15 If you love me keep my commands.

Show your devotion to me by your obedience. Demonstrate your loyalty to me with your willingness to do what I've asked. You show that your love is real, and not just empty words, by the way you carry out my will and my commands.
True love begets action. Love goes beyond mere sentimental words.
It will become plain and obvious to you just how true and sincere your love for me is by how much you are willing to do and to what extent you will carry out my desires. The attitude with which you do it will be further evidence of your sincerity. If you willingly and joyfully keep my commands it is proof of your love. If you grudgingly comply out of a sense of obligation and duty, this is proof that you do not yet love me as I love you.
Your inward desire to please me is demonstrated by your outward actions. A heart empty and devoid of love will produce insincere and hypocritical deeds. I am not seeking mechanical robotic compliance, but rather, heart-felt and undivided devotion.

John 14: 13, 14

13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

I promise to continue doing the works I have been doing among you, even after I've returned to the Father. I will keep doing things for you and give you what you ask for.
When I give you what you need, it is really the Father in me doing His work, so whenever He does it, He is glorified through me. Only God could do the things you see me doing.
After I am gone, you will do the same works that you see me doing. In fact, you will do greater works than me because when you pray in my Name and ask for help I will answer and enable you to do "greater" things.
In the same way the Father is in me, working in me, I will be in you and work in you. When the Father is working in me, and when I am working in you, all of it brings glory to God the Father.
The glory of God is His presence. God's presence is evidenced when His works are done in me and in you.
My greatest joy and desire is God's glory, so anything that will bring glory to Him is what I want to do.
That is why I am encouraging you to ask me for anything in agreement and harmony with who I am and what I want to do. This gives me another opportunity to glorify my Father. The more you ask for the more I can do the more God the Father is glorified.
God knows that the more dependent you are on Him the better off you are. He created you to be in a dependent relationship with Him. You function at your best when you are rightly relating to Him. God has designed you to give praise, honor, respect & glory to Him.
God has made you to be at your best when you are humble, submissive, yielded, obedient, and fully reliant upon Him. The sin in the Garden was to act independently from God and become your own gods, full of pride and arrogance.
It is the sin of pride that resists needing me and having to ask me for anything. It is a sign of faith, trust and belief that you ask me for things. It means you believe I can give it to you, thereby exercising faith in me. Faith pleases God the Father. Without it you cannot please Him. (see Hebrews)
You believe in God, believe also in me. (repeat theme of vs. 1)
He delights in you and you delight in Him in return. That is LOVE.
Asking Him for things is the best reminder that you need Him.
Apart from Him even I can do nothing. I cannot be apart from Him, I cannot act independently from Him because we are One. And in my bodily form I demonstrate that I can do nothing without Him - because I have laid aside my equality with God and willingly subjected myself to a position of great need and dependence on God. This arrangement is for your benefit.
I can sympathize with your weaknesses. I need to rely on God's power and strength like you do. I became a man so you would know that I know how you feel.
When you ask me to do something, you can be sure I will do whatever is in harmony with my Father's purposes. I do not say that I "might" do it, or would "consider" doing it, or even that I "am capable" of doing it, but rather, I tell you that I "will" do it. When you ask for something, in my name, then it will bring glory to the Father. It is, therefore, my joy and pleasure and great honor to do it.

John 14:12

12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

You have been watching me do what I do. You are eye witnesses. You have been there first-hand and up-close to see and hear every word. Not by word of mouth or rumor, but personally you have seen my works. Your belief and trust and faith will enable you to do the same things that you see me doing. In the same way that God is working through me, he will work through you. God lives in me and works through me. When I go to the Father and send the Holy Spirit, He will live in you and work through you in the same manner doing the same things. This is all the plan God has to accomplish His will. What He began in me, He will finish in you, only on a grander and larger scale. Tehre will be millions and millions of people in whom the H.S. will dwell and work. Collectively and simultaneously you will accomplish much more over many years than I could as one individual limited to a span of one life time in one geographical location. God’s work will not end with my departure. On the contrary, my leaving will usher in a new covenant which will enable His works to expand to cover the whole earth to all peoples in all nations. With each new convert, the body of Christ increases and grows in size, influence, power, and scope. From your limited perspective it would seem better for me to remain with you. But by looking at the whole picture you will see that my leaving is better for the entire world- past, present and future.

John 14:11

11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

Believe what I am telling you about this relationship the Father and Son share. You can have confidence in what I am saying, you can trust my words, remember, I AM THE TRUTH!. You can take me at my word. I say what I mean and mean what I say. The Father is in me and I am in Him, there is no separation – only union and oneness that you must believe exists in order to understand who I am.
If for some reason (unbelief, fear) my words are not enough, then look at the evidence of the works themselves. That should be proof enough. It should be obvious that my works back up my words. No one could do what I am doing unless God were working through him/her. The miracles are proof of what I say. My claims are not empty or vain.
What more can I say to convince you? If I was all talk and not walk then I would not blame you for doubting me, but my actions back up my words 100%. I’m giving you ample reason to be able to believe me when I tell you that the Father and I are residing in one another, that we are inseparable, that we are indeed ONE.
I don’t expect you to fully understand this divine mystery just yet, but I do expect you to believe what I say about it. The fact that you request that I show you the Father indicates that not only do you not understand what I’ve said but you also do not trust me to be telling you the truth. If you needed more, then I would have given you more. But what I have shown you and demonstrated to you is enough. It is sufficient.
If you really believed me, your hearts would not be troubled, as they now are.

John 14: 10

10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.

Do you not believe that the Father and I are in each other? Our ‘one-ness’ is a mystery; no one has ever seen anything like this before. I know it is difficult for you to make sense of it, so you just have to trust me when I tell you it is true. Do not try to figure it out just yet, simply believe it.
I created your heart, therefore I understand how it is that you are unable or unwilling to believe. Face the fact that your heart is unbelieving; that your faith is lacking. By challenging you with this question I am exposing your unbelief.
It is essential that you believe me and trust me because you will face opposition and trials, on account of me, in the days ahead. You must stand firm and be convinced that I am doing the Father’s will, especially when you see me on the cross.
You would have good reason to be troubled if I were abandoning you and deserting you. If I were a temporary fly-by-night revolutionary leader, organizing a political movement, then I would not be serving the cause to leave. On the contrary, I would remain to keep the revolution going.
My kingdom is not of this world. That is not what I am all about. I am the King of Heaven and Earth and I will reign forever and ever.
I emptied myself and humbled myself and became a servant, I have willingly submitted to my Father’s authority. I do not presume to speak on my own, but defer to His rule and Lordship and supremacy over me. I do not take it upon myself to do or say anything of my own initiative but rather, I take all my directives form my Father who is the Ultimate and Supreme Authority and Master of all.
What I am telling you comes from the Highest Authority, the Most Reliable Source, the Final Word, the Absolutely Dependable basis and origin. There is no one higher to appeal to or to verify this with. This is where truth originates, in the mind and heart of God, Creator of all. Truthful words have their beginning with God. He cannot speak anything but truth. God is truth and I just told you that I am the Truth. God is 100% accurate and inerrant. God the Father has given His Son, me, the authority to repeat His words. Because He is in me and I am in Him, we speak identical words without conflict or contradiction. The Father lives in me and is accomplishing His plan. Whatever He says goes. Whatever He desires is carried out.
While I am on the earth in this humble role, I take my lead from Him. I am fully and completely obedient. I never usurp God’s authority by doing or saying anything independently of Him.
I am in the Father and the Father is in me, therefore, He is free to do whatever He wants through me. I did not come to do my will, but His.
The Father is living in me and therefore is doing His work in me and through me and according to His plan and purpose. His ways are my ways and His thoughts are my thoughts, not the other way around.
When I was in Heaven with Him we had a different arrangement. But this is a new covenant which requires a different way of relating to each other while I am here with you.
Consider my conversation with you as being directly from God Himself to you. He is speaking to you face to face as He did with Moses and He is calling you “friends”. You may relate to God in the same way you relate to me.
Recognize that He has entrusted to me His words of life, healing power, authority, love, forgiveness, etc. Whatever He wants done will be done because I do and say exactly what He wants. I do not alter it or change it or translate it, it is 100% pure God-talk.
I am the only one who can understand and communicate God’s truth without distorting it, polluting it, misinterpreting it, minimizing it, or contaminating it in any way. I am without sin, therefore, can speak the words of God without error or prejudice. I am a perfect vessel through which His voice can be heard and His truth revealed and His nature expressed. He can trust me to deliver His word accurately and untainted by the flesh.
The Father has chosen in His wisdom to work in me. In many ways He has accepted limits and restrictions as a consequence of working through my humanness. Divine has taken on flesh. God is working out His salvation through me.
My Father has work to do, a plan to fulfill, a universe to run. He is accomplishing His work in and through me. His perfect plan included my coming to be with you for a short while. His work of redemption and salvation will be finished in my death and resurrection. He is in me reconciling the world to Himself.
God’s work of creation was finished in six days and then He rested, but His work of salvation continues till this day, until everyone is saved. This work is a joint effort; we are doing this together as One.
My work on earth is complete; this phase of God’s plan is coming to a close; but there is much more to come. I am the Suffering Servant now, but will come again as the Mighty Warrior.
I must go to prepare the next step in the Plan so when the times the Father has set (which only He knows) everything will be ready.

John 14:9

9 Jesus answered, ‘Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ’Show us the Father’?

Jesus answered, I thought you would have known me better by this time, Philip. After _ years of being together, and yet you don’t realize who I am yet. After all the conversations we’ve had and after seeing all the demonstrations of God’s power and hearing all the teaching and witnessing all the miracles, and still you do not know me…….what more will it take?
You claim if you could just see the Father that would be enough. I AM ENOUGH! I’ve given you all that you need and I’ve shown you all you need to see. Are you not paying attention? Are you as dull as the Pharisees who are ever learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth? Who are seeing but remain blind? Who are listening but remain deaf?
You have had the privilege of watching, observing, & listening long enough to know that I am authentic. This is no hoax.
Your request to be shown the Father reveals your lack of understanding. I know men’s hearts, so I am not surprised, but I am saddened. For your sake, it is essential that you grasp the full implications of what I am telling you. I am telling you as plainly as I can that I am equal with the Father. Your understanding of this truth would result in a peaceful calm confident heart rather than a troubled heart.
Do not fear the plan of God even though it includes my leaving you. His plan includes difficult things for Him, for me, and for you. My betrayal, suffering, death, burial, and resurrection are not easy things to endure, but they are necessary things.
While I am bound in this humble body of flesh God the Father is greater than I, but when I return to heaven, I will be exalted and will resume my rightful place at the right hand of God. I will return to the place I left before I laid aside my glory and emptied myself to come to earth.
In a few years, my Apostle, Paul will describe me by writing that I am the perfect representation of God, that His fullness dwells in me, and that the glory of God is revealed in me.
How can you say Show us the Father when you are already staring him in the face? Hearing his voice? Watching him heal? Sleeping and eating and walking with him? Is it not obvious that no man could do the things I am doing unless God was working in him? Has anyone ever done the things I have done? No mere human can do the things I do.
If I were able to do these things on my own, independently of the Father, then I would be another God! Moses wrote, The Lord your God is One. Either I am one God and the Father is another God, or, we are the same God, working in perfect harmony and unity. The only explanation is that we are the same Divine Personhood.
Consider the implications of what I am telling you. God is good. What He does is good. Always. Therefore, my leaving you can only be good. Trust that God’s plan is good even though it includes my death.
I will return. I will take you to be with me, and that is as good as it gets! There is nothing better than that – to live with God and enjoy Him forever.

John 14:8

8 Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’

Philip said, Lord, what you are saying doesn’t make sense to us. If you would just give us a glimpse of the Father then we’d be convinced. We’d get it. We see you, but how is it that you are telling us we are seeing the Father? You don’t look like the Father, at least not the way we imagined He would look.
If we could see the ‘real deal’ that would be the confirmation we need to comprehend what you’re saying about yourself. We need to see you side by side so we can decide for ourselves if what you are saying makes sense.
We are troubled because we don’t understand. If we could just see God, then our hearts would be put at ease. It’s all so vague and mysterious to us. It would be much easier and simpler if you could just let us see the Father. It would be plain to us then.
We are so shaken by what you are saying about your departure then we can’t really think clearly enough to allow your words of comfort to sink in enough to have an impact. We need something external, some outward proof, to relieve our anxiety. We need something more concrete, something dramatic, and seeing the Father in person would be enough to show us that we don’t need to be afraid.

John 14: 6-7

6-7 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

This is why I could say that you know the Way, because I am the way and you know me. You can get to the Father by way of me, by going through me. I give you access to the Father. There is no other entryway or door. That is why it is vitally important that you know me. If you by-pass me and seek another way to the Father you will miss Him and will not ever get to where He is. If you want to live in His many rooms then you must enter by the door that He has designed which is me.

Not only am I the way but I am also the Truth and the Life. I am the embodiment of all that is true. I am truthful through and through so you can bank on what I’ve told you. You can put your troubled minds and hearts at ease because I tell you the truth about all that concerns you. I am incapable of deceiving you or misleading you in any way. If I had been untruthful with you in the past I could understand your worry; but I’ve always told you the truth because that is who I am. I am true to my nature which is truth.

Not only am I the way to the Father and way to Heaven, and the final and ultimate truth regarding all spiritual matters, but I also am the Life. I am eternal life. I have the power over death. Death can never conquer me or overcome me. I will lay my life down as a ransom, as a LIVING sacrifice, but I have the power to take it back up again, and I will do so. Death has no hold on me because I am 100% pure life. I am the creator of life and the sustainer of all that exists. (See Jn 1) The words I speak are Life and Truth. They are life-giving. Without me there would be no life because everything is held together by the power of my word. I alone have the words of life. I will voluntarily submit to death when I identify with the guilt and sin of all mankind. I willingly taste death for you. But because I am greater than death, because I have always been eternal life, I have no beginning and no end. I created time. I am before, above and over all time. I am before, above and over death. I created the universe and all that is in it which includes death. Death cannot stop me. Death submits to my authority because I possess the keys. Death is punishment and separation from life, which I will bear so you will not have to, though you deserve to die and I do not. The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is Eternal Life through Me.

A relationship with me is the portal through which you must pass to enter the presence of the Father in a literal physical way in the future, and also in a spiritual way in the present. While you remain on earth your relationship with me is synonymous with a relationship with the Father.

When you really know me you know the Father as well. Your relationship with the Father must rest on me and the work I do on your behalf; bringing together and reconciling Holy God and sinful mankind. You know the Father through your knowledge of me for now. You will know the Father face to face later because of the relationship you with have with me now. Whether future or present, the only access a person has to the Father is by way of a relationship with me.

I am the only Source of Life. He who has the Son has Life, and he who does not have the Son does not have Life. Nothing has life apart from me. If you actually recognize me for who I really am, you’d know my Father also. From now on, consider this to be a fact- because you know me you do know my Father. Knowing me is identical and equal to knowing the Father. Not only do you know Him by knowing me, but you also see Him by seeing me. It is one and the same. When you look at me you are looking at the Father.

John 14: 4-5

4 You know the way to the place where I am going.

I want you to realize that you already know how to get to the place I am going. I know your hearts are troubled because I have told you I am going away, but not only have I told you about where I am going (to prepare a place for you in My Father's House) but I also want to reassure you that you even know the way to that place. Take comfort, you will not get lost along the way. It is not a secret path that is hidden from you that you will have to search for. The way is plain and simple and straightforward. In fact, it is so simple that you have overlooked it.

5 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how we know the way?"

Thomas said, Lord, I know you've told us before but we just don't get it. Whatever you are trying to explain to us sounds like nothing we’ve ever heard before. It doesn't make sense to us that you would be leaving us so soon. You’ve only been leading us and teaching us for 3 years. And since we do not understand the first part, about where you are going, we certainly cannot understand the second part about how to get there.

John 14: 3

3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

Since my purpose in going is to get rooms ready for you all, it only makes sense that I will come back to get you so you can live in what I've made ready. You can rest assured that my work will not go to waste. The work I am doing is for you and for those who will come after you. Otherwise, I would not need to go. If this life was all there was, and if you were the only children God had in mind to save, then I'd stay here with you. But the rooms you live in now are temporary; they are mere shadows of what is in store for you. Even your earthly bodies will be transformed to make you fit for your new home so you can stay there forever.
I want you to be with me where I am. The purpose of my coming to earth to be with you here was so I could bring you there. My temporary visit to earth was to tell you the good news of your permanent home in Heaven. My death and resurrection will seal the deal. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee that you will make your residency in Heaven.
